Emotional Literacy Training for Students
The Emotional Literacy (EL) programme provides a rich and comprehensive environment in which both the academic and socio-emotional development of students may be addressed. The EL programme is a comprehensive 6-step programme designed to promote social, emotional, and academic learning using the RULER model (see Table 1). The RULER model stresses the Recognition, Understanding, Labeling, Expression, and Regulation of emotions for effective and optimal learning for students and for teachers, as deliverers of the emotional literacy programme. The RULER model posits that teaching a rich vocabulary of ‘feeling words’ not only builds students’ vocabulary but helps in developing interpersonal and intrapersonal growth.

The emotional literacy programme is easily integrated into existing curriculum and is not seen as an add on. It is a field tested programme and has demonstrated improved results in English, Maths and Science in the UK. It has been developed by Dr Marc Brackett and colleagues at Yale Univesity.
The training involves 2 days whereby delegates will be provided with materials to train their school colleagues on the delivery of the programme components. |
